YugabyteDB is not just wire compatible with PostgreSQL, it is feature compatible. If you are a Postgres developer or user, this workshop  will show you how you can start using YugabyteDB with practically no changes to your code or tools. We will start with the simple commands and work our way to more advanced subqueries, CTEs, functions, and stored procedures.

Who is this course for

This course if for PostgreSQL users who want to learn how to use a highly scalable, resilient distributed SQL database. We assume you are comfortable with PostgreSQL and are an aficionado of (or interested in) YugabyteDB or distributed SQL.

What is YugabyteDB

YugabyteDB is an open source distributed SQL database for transactional applications. YugabyteDB is feature compatible with Postgres. It achieves this by reusing PostgreSQL’s query layer giving users and developers compatibility with app framework, features, drivers, and tools.

What we will cover

In just 90 minutes, you’ll start a free YugabyteDB cluster in YugabyteDB Managed, connect to it using PostgreSQL clients like YugabyteDB Managed Shell and pgAdmin, install the Northwind database, some semi-complex SQL using subqueries, recursive CTEs, and functions, and a wide range of PostgreSQL commands from the pgExercises dataset.

You’ll see just how easy it is to start using PostgreSQL on a cloud native distributed SQL database.

Topics Covered in 90 Minutes

*Start a free-tier YugabyteDB Managed cluster with just a click of a button

*Connect to your distributed cluster using PostgreSQL clients such as YugabyteDB Managed Shell and pgAdmin

*Install the PostgreSQL-compatible version of the Northwind dataset

*Download the pgExercises dataset and run some side-by-side comparisons of subqueries for PostgreSQL and YSQL

*Explore and get comfortable running a wide range of Postgres commands on the database including some side-by-side comparisons of recursive CTEs for PostgreSQL and YSQL on an employee hierarchy and the Bacon Numbers example from IMDb

*See how to use multiple connections and extensions

*September 16th, 2021 at 9am PT (5pm GMT)

*Create a free-tier YugabyteDB Managed account and start your cluster (takes about 3 mins)

*Have access to pgAdmin and a running PostgreSQL server (local or remote) on which you can run PostgreSQL commands for comparison to your free-tier YugabyteDB cluster.

How can I get started?

Before attending the workshop, make sure you have:

*A YugabyteDB Managed account – Register here in under 5 minutes

*The Postgres-compatible database management tool installed locally so you can execute SQL scripts from file (we’ll be using pgAdmin).

Also be sure to join our community Slack channel.  That is where we have workshop-specific discussions.
