Recent Highlights and Happenings

It’s time for another monthly hiring blog post from the Yugabyte team. 2020 remains a difficult year; it’s our hope that sharing this information may be some good news to some of you at a time when it’s needed most.

Since our last post, we have made some announcements we’re very proud of, including these highlights …

Yugabyte Was Named a 2020 Gartner Cool Vendor in Data Management

We are incredibly proud to have recently been recognized by Gartner as a Cool Vendor in Data Management! [1]

The report recommends, “as a data and analytics leader focused on delivering cost-effective innovation, you should evaluate emerging technologies, focusing on those that provide new capabilities in familiar data management paradigms, without requiring sizable investments in new skills.“

We couldn’t agree more. This is why we built YugabyteDB with two APIs that implement the same wire protocol, data modeling capabilities, and query capabilities as that of existing databases, so that developers can easily get started and make use of existing tools and integrations. We Released YugabyteDB 2.5

We are excited to have announced the release of YugabyteDB 2.5! YugabyteDB 2.5 brings major enhancements to multi-region deployments, performance, and security features offered by the database – all while simultaneously improving on high availability, horizontal scalability, and ease of managing the database. We put together several blog posts to help you explore what’s new, and you’re invited to a live webinar on Dec. 8:

  • Announcing YugabyteDB 2.5 – In this blog post, we summarize the highlights in the YugabyteDB 2.5 release, including enhanced multi-region capabilities with geo-partitioning and follower reads, enterprise security features, benchmark performance, core database features, and future roadmap.
  • Geo-Partitioning of Data in YugabyteDB – In this blog post, we dive into everything you need to know about geo-partitioning of data, including the availability of row-level geo-partitioning in YugabyteDB, a feature heavily requested by our user community and enterprise customers alike. This feature allows fine-grained control over pinning data in a user table (at a per-row level) to geographic locations, thereby allowing the data residency to be managed at the database level.
  • What’s New in YugabyteDB 2.5 – Enterprise-Grade Security Features – In this blog post, we outline the many new enterprise-grade security features of YugabyteDB. The release brings scram-sha-256 authentication, LDAP authentication, audit logging, column level permissions, and data encryption features.
  • [Live Webinar] Enterprise Security Features in YugabyteDB – Join us on Dec. 8 at 11:00 am PT for a live webinar with Karthik Ranganathan, CTO and Co-Founder of Yugabyte, where you can learn all about the enterprise security features in YugabyteDB and get your questions answered.

We Shared Exciting Open Source Community Momentum & Highlights

We just released YugabyteDB 2.5, and open source software like that doesn’t happen without an awesome open source community backing it. As the year draws to a close, we took the opportunity to call out some YugabyteDB community highlights from 2020, including:

  • Half a million (and counting) distributed SQL clusters deployed
  • 2,000+ community Slack members
  • 200+ YugabyteDB certifications and badges granted
  • 130+ contributors to open source
  • 9 new YugabyteDB community meetups
  • 1,000+ YugabyteDB community rewards sent worldwide

Due to COVID-19, we remain fully virtual in all aspects of our work, including recruiting. Because in-person meetings are restricted, we looked for ways to bring to life what it’s like to work at Yugabyte. In the spirit of doing so, we will introduce a Yugabeing in our hiring posts so you can learn about what it’s like to work here directly from the talented people who have already joined us on our ambitious mission. With that, here’s an introduction to Grishma Mehta.
