We’re thrilled to share that Yugabyte has been recognized in the recently published 2023 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Database Management Systems for our distributed PostgreSQL-compatible database, YugabyteDB!

We are proud that Yugabyte is among the top 20 database vendors in the world based on market-leading capabilities, market reach, and excellent customer feedback. This is especially significant because cloud database management systems are one of the fastest-growing and most competitive IT market segments. It is also a testament to Yugabyte’s innovation and leadership in accelerating the industry-wide adoption of distributed databases.

Inclusion in the 2023 Magic Quadrant for Cloud Database Management Systems is in addition to YugabyteDB being named a Strong Performer in Gartner Peer Insights™ Voice of the Customer for Cloud Database Management Systems after receiving a rating of 4.6 out of 5 based on 35 responses as of March 2023. Yugabyte has also been recognized as a Representative Vendor of distributed transactional databases in the 2023 Gartner Hype Cycle™ for Data Management for the third consecutive year.

As we look to the future, it is great to see the convergence between the needs of the modern data stack and YugabyteDB’s unique strengths. Three trends stand out in particular.

All About PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is becoming the default API for cloud native transactional databases. It is no wonder, considering its mature database capabilities, massive ecosystem, powerful extensions, and vibrant open-source community.

Yugabyte identified the secular trend towards PostgreSQL compatibility over five years ago, announcing PostgreSQL compatibility in 2018. Since then, we have worked to achieve full (aka runtime) compatibility. We now support almost everything that PostgreSQL offers in an identical manner, including functions, stored procedures, cursors, and triggers, read committed transaction isolation, pessimistic locking, wait-on-conflict concurrency control, and more. This full compatibility allows YugabyteDB to inherit the rich PostgreSQL ecosystem of drivers, extensions, and integrations.

We are also continuously improving the performance of the database for workloads at every scale, allowing organizations to migrate their applications running on single-node database instances to a fully distributed database environment with minimal code changes. YugabyteDB is essentially distributed PostgreSQL for modern applications.

Modern Business Critical Apps Need Distributed SQL Databases

Business applications increasingly require what distributed SQL databases offer: massive on-demand scalability, built-in resilience, and flexible geo-distribution. Some of the world’s leading organizations, including Fiserv, Paramount+, GM, Rakuten, Kroger, and others, trust YugabyteDB to run tier 0 and tier 1 applications. For example:

YugabyteDB delivers best-in-class security capabilities, observability, resilience, and disaster recovery, and integrates well with the existing enterprise data architecture.

YugabyteDB is also the perfect choice for workloads that need data geo-distribution. The database allows you to design and deploy the optimal architecture for your global application. You can choose from various blueprints and replication techniques to distribute, access, and update your data to achieve the right mix of latency, resilience, and consistency.

As more countries put data residency regulations in place, it is crucial that global businesses evaluate their databases to ensure they can be deployed in flexible global architectures.

Hybrid and Multi-Cloud Deployments Are Here to Stay

Enterprises have shown a clear preference for a hybrid and multi-cloud cloud future through their IT infrastructure choices. We are seeing some companies repatriate workloads from the public cloud back to their data centers, while others are taking a more measured approach to cloud adoption.

The multi-cloud decision is driven by the need to maintain strategic optionality. Being able to switch cloud providers or move on-premises when needed, allows large enterprises to retain negotiating power. Global regulatory changes are also mandating a reduction in cloud concentration risk, and proven resilience, in the event of the failure of a cloud provider’s infrastructure.

YugabyteDB can be deployed in any public, private, hybrid, or multi-cloud environment, whether it is bare metal, virtual, or container-based. This allows businesses to seamlessly operate across public, private, and hybrid clouds to ensure flexibility and avoid vendor lock-in.

We Are Just Getting Started!

This has been an exciting year for Yugabyte in terms of product development, customer traction, and partnerships. Our mission is to make YugabyteDB the database of choice for modern applications!
